Our plane touched down in the early morning hours...it was hot and humid already. The Gold coast was beautiful, palm trees lined along well manicured lawns & bougainvillea plants climbing over tall walls. Africa, the dark continent, oh so they say. Friendly faces and bright smiles greeted us to Accra. The honking horns jolted us awake and out of our travel slumber. We were here for 10 days...we didn't really know what lay ahead. Well, we had a schedule. We had people to meet and meetings planned. But they all were on paper...we had yet to experience it all.
We were taken to the slums of Accra on our first day. Places like this really exist. The dirt, the garbage, the stagnant water, the piles of old cars and scrap metal. Clothes strung on lines giving some appearance of cleanliness and life. Fires burning outside cooking up a meager meal. Public showers for just a few dollars. These children grab our hands, hold them tightly, and smiling at us declare, "come let us show you our place!" Really? you live here? We just had an hour of singing and bible stories with these children. All are welcome in the district. To hear the name of Jesus, to hear the good news that Christ died for them. Their dark skin and deep, brown eyes make me catch my breath...God you've created so beautifully!
Mercy Ministry welcomes us next. Could it be possible that these dear children were abandoned? What did they do to deserve this treatment? To be thrown out as garbage. One girl has 6 toes on each foot. They are so beautiful, little brown toes. A small boy lays very still as his little body suffers from Spina bifida. Another lays his head on my lap, he looks up into my eyes and I can't help but feel my heart melt. He was placed in a bag as soon as he took his first breath. Placed at a busy corner of town, laying all alone with placenta in a dirty plastic bag. His cries startled and brought him life as he was carried to a shelter, then later brought to this loving home. There are no words.
Early mornings and long, hot afternoons, we are thrilled that God brought us two groups of eager students. Our days run together as the Bible teaching continues...Creation, Fall of Man, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Passover, the Prophets, Jesus, the disciples, and the Crucifixion, Burial and Resurrection. God's Word unfolding the Redemption story. So many good questions that point us back to Scripture. Answers that bring us all to our knees with wonder and amazement...Christ the Promised One sent to die for our sins!
Christ said in Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." One doesn't have to travel far to hear that a "false gospel" has entered many countries. You can hear all kinds of good reports and see a lot of religious activity around you. Don't be deceived. There is NOTHING that you can do to earn salvation. There isn't anything that you need to ADD to what Christ did for you on the Cross. Ephesians 2:8,9
Wide is the gate. It's easy to attract thousands with a message that promises prosperity & blessings. The Gospel will be offensive to it's hearers. But it need not drive them away. Narrow is the road. Equip2serve desires to clearly explain that narrow WAY. A close look and study of God's Word will give a clear understanding of man's sin and God's love & redemption (1 Cor.15:3,4) (Romans 6:23)
Our prayer is very simple. That God would raise up men and women who desire to tell others the Gospel message. We want to help in this process. That the word of God will continue to increase and spread!
